Senators to Have Closed Door Briefings on AI

Potentials and risks to be investigated.

Members of the Senate will be participating in closed-door meetings over the summer covering a number of questions surrounding artificial intelligence.

In a letter to the senators, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, in partnership with Senators Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, and Todd Young of Indiana, said the hearings would seek to determine the current status of AI presently, what is on the horizon for the technology, and how the Defense Department and intelligence community will be employing it. The hearing with DoD and intelligence will be classified.

“As AI transforms our world, the Senate must keep abreast of the extraordinary potential, and risks, AI presents,” Senator Schumer wrote.

He said he had been working on the plans closely with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and the leaders of the House, Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California, and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

Executives in the artificial intelligence industry have been urging Congress to regulate AI. Outlines for legislation to govern AI are expected after the summer hearings.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell as they collaborate on the AI briefings in the Senate.
  • For Speaker McCarthy and Congressman Jeffries as they prepare to regulate artificial intelligence through legislation.
  • For Defense Department officials as they prepare to inform members of Congress on the emerging AI technology.
